"THE NEW DEADPOOL NSFW TRAILER IS ONLINE!!!" ...is how I would be reacting if 2 of 2 things weren't recently happening in the overall comic universe and Hollywood in general:
1.) Reliance on CGI - I love computer generated things. I love animatronic things. I love photoshop. I like baseball when the stars and the league agree to not discuss the fact that we all know they're juiced up on steroids. I even sorta still like autotune. In summary, I don't mind when already awesome things are enhanced with technology. Even things that are over-enhanced are enjoyable if still underwhelming: the Matrix 2 & 3, Alex Rodriguez, Vanilla Coke, etc...
2.) Superheroes without limits - I grew up buying Superman comics with my allowance & I've supported Batman since Adam West, even buying the Batman cassette single with Prince that ultimately got me in trouble with my mom when my friend Jeremy told her that there was swearing on it. BUT I've recently grown disenchanted with this notion that comic experts have begun falling back on: Batman would win any fight because given enough time he could research any situation and know exactly what to do.... OR Superman would win any fight because he has no limits and can be as strong as he needs to be or as fast as he needs to be.... OR Wade Wilson would win any fight because he can't be killed no matter what.
Computer generated images and comic books are both things that make the world great and the fact that they are now cool and in the fashion is wonderful for us kids that used to hide the fact we read comics or were beat up for it. But yall have gotten lazy. Like now that we're a part of the in-crowd we've let it go to our heads and can't be bothered to come up with the creative solutions we used to have to rely on. Back when Batman was still a super-detective, but we had to actually explain shit like they do in CSI. Now you're just as likely to be at a Comic Con and ask someone “who wins in a fight between Batman and Darth Vader?” and all they can say is, "Batman. Because he'll research Anakin's weaknesses and he'll just know what to do." BORING!!!!
It's not just the fan either. I blame the comic arms race too. It seems some writers are more concerned with having the greater champion that they've fallen back on rhetoric OR keep on adding new maxed out powers /slash/ removing limits that sane writers once put in place.
I get that we're a society of “more, more, we want more...” but can we please just stop letting our kids drink soda at night and eat candy whenever they want? It's okay to tell people 'no', it's okay if wrestlers like Goldberg don't stay undefeated forever & it's okay if your superhero loses and doesn't add a new superpower just to win another crossover battle.
I still hope that Deadpool kicks ass... but I'm currently thinking it's going to be closer to the offspring of the Matrix Reloaded and Van Wilder. That's still a pretty good baby! It's just not a kick-ass baby.
